The practice

Two materials, one studio

Oil paint and bronze, worked side by side in a converted farm building near Lisbon.

Painting

My paintings begin as colour fields laid down in thin oil washes on linen, then built, scraped and glazed over weeks. I use a limited palette of ultramarine, raw sienna, vermilion and bone white, so each canvas keeps a quiet, mineral light.

Sizes run from small studies on panel to canvases of two metres. I paint on the north wall of the studio, in the even light that the Arrábida hills give until late afternoon.

Bronze

Each sculpture is modelled in wax and cast by the lost-wax method at a small foundry in Setúbal, where I attend every pour. Back in the studio I chase the surface, then colour it with patinas of liver of sulphur, ferric nitrate and wax.

Editions are small, between three and eight casts, and every cast is numbered, signed and documented with a certificate.
